We made extensive preparations before launching our campaign, including building a bridge across the Danube, which allowed us to move our troops and supplies more efficiently. The key to our success was a combination of strategy, perseverance, and adaptability. We systematically captured Dacian fortresses and cut off their supply lines, eventually forcing Decebalus to retreat to his capital, Sarmizegetusa.
CC: It must have been a great challenge to confront an enemy skilled in guerrilla warfare. How did you adapt your tactics to counter their strategies?
T: Indeed, it was challenging. We had to learn from our experiences in the First Dacian War and adjust our tactics accordingly. This allowed us to limit the Dacians’ mobility and hinder their ability to launch surprise attacks.
Now, Cid, I am eager to hear about one of your most important battles. Please, share your experiences with us.
CC: Of course, Emperor Trajan. One of my most significant battles was the Siege of Valencia. After years of fighting against the Moors, I sought to capture the city of Valencia and establish it as a Christian stronghold. The siege lasted several months, with both sides enduring great hardships. The Moors were well-prepared, and their defenses were formidable.
We had to be patient and persistent. By cutting off the city’s supplies and launching relentless attacks on their fortifications, we gradually weakened their defenses. Eventually, the city fell, and we were able to establish a Christian foothold in the region.
BL: That sounds like a hard-fought victory, Cid. Were there any particular challenges that you faced during the siege, and how did you overcome them?
CC: One of the main challenges we faced was maintaining the morale of our troops. The siege was long and grueling, and there were moments when it seemed like the city would never fall. However, I made sure to keep my men focused on our ultimate goal and reminded them of the importance of our cause. Additionally, we employed various siege engines, such as trebuchets and battering rams, to break through the city’s defenses, which eventually led to our victory.

CC: Your legacy endures through the centuries, with historians considering you one of the “Five Good Emperors” of Rome. The Roman people, too, held you in high regard, as evidenced by the enduring phrase “felicior Augusto, melior Traiano” which means “luckier than Augustus, better than Trajan.”
T: I am humbled to hear that my efforts have left a positive impact on history. Now, Admiral de Lezo, I am curious to learn how history remembers our dear Cid Campeador. Please, share your insights.
BL: Of course, Emperor Trajan. Cid Campeador, also known as El Cid, is remembered as a legendary hero in Spain. His deeds during the Reconquista, particularly the capture of Valencia, have become the stuff of legends. He is celebrated for his military prowess, honor, and chivalry.
